Captioning Media

Captioning is the process of converting audio to text and then displaying the text visually. It is a particularly effective option for deaf and hard-of-hearing students since it provides those individuals with the ability to have a viewing experience that is comparable to that of a hearing person.

Types of Captioning

Real-Time Captioning refers to typing what is being said in “real time” into a computer that projects the words onto a screen. CART (Computer Assisted Real-time Translation), is a type of real-time captioning used predominantly in educational settings. Real-time captioning can occur either locally and remotely.

Open Captioning are captions that are always in view on the screen and cannot be turned off by the viewer.

Closed Captioning are captions that may be in view and can be turned on or off by the viewer.
