Project Access

Using a simulated lecture that allows participants to experience exactly what deaf students experience in a mainstreamed classroom, this workshop provides real-life strategies and extensive on-line resources that will help faculty modify their teaching to provide greater access for student learning.

MODE Webinars

Math Observations in Deaf Education (MODE) is a monthly webinar series hosted by Dr. Dawn Kidd, a middle school math teacher at the Texas School for the Deaf.  Dr. Kidd invites different guests each month to discuss in ASL a particular current topic in math education. The webinar is presented in an informal talk show format, complete with visual aids, ideas for teaching, etc.  Voice interpreting and captioning are provided for each webinar.

Project Fast Forward

Funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF), Project Fast Forward is providing a pathway for deaf and hard-of-hearing students to transition from high school to college by offering computer-related dual credit courses. Project Fast Forward is housed in the Information and Computing Studies Department at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID), one of the eight colleges of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in Rochester, NY.

STEM ASL Video Dictionary

The project will collect terminology commonly used in a particular STEM discipline, determine how those concepts are being signed by experts in selected representative areas of the country, and then decide on recommended signs. The result will be the creation of  a searchable text and video online database of STEM-related signs. Geoff Poor, a Professor in the NTID American Sign Language and Interpreting Education department, is heading up this project. For the first phase of this project, IT signs will be captured for this online database.
