Testing accommodation for deaf/hh students is a gray area – with valid arguments of fairness and accommodation made on both sides. Your campus disability office is the best source for campus-wide policies on accommodation, and on the accommodations formally requested by individual students.

  • Determine whether or not the student has official written support for his/her request. (At some universities, an official document lists accommodations required for a student to exhibit his/her best knowledge of the material.)
  • Before the first test, determine if there are any testing accommodation concerns and if so, discuss them privately with the student before the test, with an interpreter/captionist if needed.
  • If you are announcing at intervals when the testing time is completed, make sure the deaf/hh students have been made aware by flashing the lights or tapping their desks to get their attention.
